like a few years late but
any idea what the blueish grey box is on top of the board? a large parametric? some slapback, reverb phaser combo? is that the box that makes the famous scientist snare echo? anyone? anyone?

It's one of the Scientist videos:

You can't miss the object.
I think it's having an effect on the reverb - either changing the eq on the reverb or the reverb length, but it's difficult to tell because he tweaks the desk just after he turns the knob.

the mysterious box
given his history in audio electronics, it is quite likely it is an effect he built himself. it could be a notch filter or a delay unit..
i would say that the verb decay time is pretty constant. one of his signature noises is the snare thru a filter (notch type, or more simply, a phaser) into a reverb (spring in the early days, plates later) which is then repeated by a delay set to an 8th note. the box could be a unit he has built that does all three at the same time. trying to recreate that signature sound in different studios with different units could require the fabrication of such a device.
