This album has a photo on the inside CD-insert Perry with his mixer at the Black Ark.
Well, if you get this CD, this pic may help you to figure it out...maybe????? ;).

just as a thought. I could not find any info fast about what board he had for sure...

the link looks like does not work...
here is another link to check the CD I was talking about:
http://www.rounder.com/rounder/catalog/bylabel/hbea/77/77.html

*********
I was trying to find somethin' bout it..., nothing yet.
I've found sort of interesting interview :
http://niceup.com/interviews/lee_perry

, you know, I was just thinkin', if you had TheGuy himself on the phone and ask him: "Hey, man, what board did you use???"..., you may get some really unexpected answer, he he he..., check this interview...., I think Upsetter is a hard guy to deal with...sort of speak.... ;)

anyhow,
I'll drop a note here if I find something...

be well,

/mike zee

In the photos I saw from his original Black Ark studio, his board looked like a Tangent. Everything Perry used was average-quality, off-the-shelf gear of the time. Tascam 4 track, Space Echo, Mutron Bi-phase, etc etc. He did a LOT with very little. What he had was tons of talent, and access to tons of talent.

Scratch used a desk made by a company called Alice. I believe they make broadcast mixers! Smile It was not seen as a pro mixer at all but that didnt matter to scratch - he did use drum mics for vocals after all! Whenever i get caught up in technology (new or old).. thinking i need something new to create the sound im after, I always remind myself how much scratch did so much with so little. The black ark recordings capture a vibe and a time that may never come again.. and perhaps we shouldnt try to recreate it by obsessing over the gear they used. If the black ark existed now, the gear would be different but the vibe would be the same. To me that says that the vibe should come first.. and after all, Dub has always been about begining from a solid foundation and pushing boundaries to create something new.. (not meant to sound preachy - im a gear junkie too.. just my thoughts)

Check out "Deep Roots Music" and another greensleeves DVD (the name of which i cant remember) for rare footage of the black ark. Here you can see most of the gear he used e.g. Teac 3340 reel to reel tape machine and Mutron Bi-Phase (Audio damage have a vst plugin version of this) that he used a lot on hihats (think congos/max romeo albums from there).

P.S. in the later years of the black ark, someone gave scratch a soundcraft mixer which he used for a while but decided he didnt like and in true scratch style, buried it in the back yard !

The man is a living legend. I would recommend anyone to go see him while you still can. He will be missed when he is gone!

Give thanks.
