Fostex 3180 Noise?

Post by sliverr » Tue Jul 22, 2008 1:22 am

Greetings!

I have a Fostex 3180 spring reverb and it adds very much noise to the mix, i have tried to filter it out with the EQ on my mixingboard (soundcraft ghost) but i have had no progress with that, so now i wonder if some one else has a solution to this problem??

Blessings and respect

Noise is almost inevitable with spring reverbs. Some approaches you could try out to reduce the noise to acceptable levels:

1. EQing: Cut bass&treble, boost the midrange

2. If you are working with a computer: record the spring reverb signal on a separate audio track of your arrangement. Then apply a noise reduction plug-in to the track or process the audio file with a dedicated noise reduction program.

3. Connect a noise gate between the reverb unit and your mixer. Cheap ones are available starting at ca. 30US$. These are typically guitar stomp boxes, some are distortion pedals with built-in noise gate (This google search shows some examples, I haven't tried any of these though..)
