tape echo maintenance?

Post by Looter » Fri Apr 13, 2001 5:18 am

I just bought a Multivox MX-312 tape delay/spring reverb unit. These were made by Roland for Multivox and are much like a space echo. Who knows about roland tape delays? I havent been able to find much info on how to maintain them on the www.

The <A HREF="http://www.harmony-central.com/Effects/ ... (space echo) page at harmony central contains the following user statements:

"..The tape if it is over 300hrs old will make
the unit noisy. If the heads are not properly cleaned & maintained there again you will have noise..."

".. use Caig Deoxit once to clean the pots and switch controller.."

"..Keep the heads clean (isopropyl alcohol).."

"..It requires more care than a pedal. You have
to keep the heads clean, the motor oiled, and change the tape every now and again. Roland has stopped making the tapes, so you will have to splice your own.."
"..Make a 17' loop (diagonal splice) of
backcoated i/4 inch low to medium bias tape and prepare for tedium when you load it up cause it will loop all over the place and jump out at you. Be gentle, friend, and take your time..."

"..Finally there should be a little plastic packet sitting atop the tape cartridge containing the cleaning fluid & brushes for your own maintenance of the unit..."

=================================================
from "Analog Man's Paper List" at
http://users.aol.com/AnalogMike/schematics.txt
you can get photocopies of the following service manuals

23. Roland SRE-555/RE-501 Service manual (24)
24. Roland RE-201/101 Service manual 7/78-10/84 (30)

Hope this helps..
Daniel aka The Interruptor (just a jealous guy)

Just a note: I know now that the Multvox Multi Echos were not made by Roland. Multivox just made many products that were very similar to Roland's designs.

Is the tape replacing similar to that with a Korg SE-500?
