Post by JahNice » Fri Oct 24, 2008 4:59 pm

Hail up DDB-Massive!

I am searching for a song that i have heard many many times but i dont know for shure who sung it and also i dont know the title..Also i would like to know if anyone knows where i can find the Dub-versions?

ok if anyone want to try and help me out, first of all go to
http://www.myspace.com/kunterbuntsoundsystem (SuperNice Roots Soundsystem outta Dortmund,Germany)

now on their site you scroll down and on the left side there should apear a player in the shape of a tape. Then there are two Mixes in this player. One is called 1.Keep Cool Babylon. Just push play on that and the first tune is the one I am looking for..

Any help is much appreciated!

Kind regards

I haven't heard the tune before but from the first vocal bit it was clear to me that this is Sylford Walker singing. Since there aren't too many recordings by this man around it was easy to zap trough his tracks on itunes and find the one featured on that mixtape:
The tune is called Burn Babylon and can be found on the following albums:

Reggae's Greatest Hits, Vol. 10
Reggae Anthology: Joe Gibbs - Scorchers from the Mighty Two
Spot Light On Reggae, Vol.6

On the mixtape the tune is running considerably faster than the original so it sounds higher.

On Youtube I found a video that somebody created with this tune plus a dub version and some still images;

More Videos with Sylford Walker:

Live At the Paleo Festival 2005 in Switzerland together with the unstoppable Asher Selector:

Interview 2008 Part 2:

A side note on Youtube:
Youtube astonishes me time and time again.. You can find great material on there that you don't even expect to exist. I mean Sylford Walker is a completely underrated but essential roots artist who is probably almost forgotten in his home country. Thanks to Switzerland's Asher Selector he is regularly touring in Europe decades after his prime in Jamaica. On Youtube his music and live-videos can be accessed as easily as the most comercially successful artists. It's like a global community operated museum with no entrance fees..
The creepy thing is that there are no advertisements on Youtube. Google bought Youtube for 1,65 billion US$ in 2006. Since then they provide funding for that company which consumes probably the biggest bandwidth of all internet services on the web. Since I don't see how they generate income from this I would say something is fishy here!.. It wouldn't surprise me if it was all gone tomorrow.

From Wiki:
'Exact revenue or profit numbers are not published, but a June 2008 Forbes magazine article projected the 2008 revenue at $200 million, noting progress in ad sales. At that time, the price for an ad on the YouTube home page was $175,000 per day (plus a $50,000 commitment to buy Google/YouTube ads elsewhere), and a branded channel (distinguished by a customized background) cost advertisers $200,000.'

The ads/branded channel links are quite subtle but they are there on the home page. At the moment the UK page has an ad for High School Musical 3 and a link to a Channel 4 'branded channel'.

I agree, YouTube is an amazing resource for music - if there is a vaguely well known track I want to listen to YouTube is the first place I go - and the full track (and video) is almost always there.

Thank you interruptor you've just made my day! I got a download of this right away an i am taking it to the party tonight. its going to be played several times on the soundsystem! I had never heard of Sylford Walker before. What an irie Man.. 8) . I hope to see him performing live in the near future..
Youtube is great, really great and its nice to see that so many people share their rare vids and music. for example check out this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGbhcNAVxDs some life footage of the much underrated Delroy Washington from the UK. Song is called Jah Wonderful from the I-Sus Album from 1976. Some of the original Aswad are the band playing behind him. The video is from a UK documentary, but i cant remember the name of it..
Anywayz, all have a nice weekend!!

IRIE :-)

Neil: That's interesting info from Wikipedia.. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Youtube ) The same article says that the bandwidth costs were estimated in March 2008 as $1 Million per day. This is far more than the $200 million revenue estimation for the whole year 2008 which you have cited.
It seems Google is in it for strategic reasons. I don't understand why they do this but anyway, while Youtube is here let's enjoy it :)

a small addendum regarding youtube:

Google CEO Eric Schmidt admits that youtube is not generating any profit for them up to now. They think this will change soon though:
