about the cry baby or any wah-wah

Post by ocoughi » Mon Aug 10, 2009 11:11 pm

Hi dubbers,
a friend of mine gave me a crybaby today, so it was the first time i test this pedal as an aux on my setup... hummm, very, very good surprise! this crunchy filtered sound is interesting with any instrument in it! there is something that remembers me the 70's filters used by Tubby or Scientist in this pedal! it gives to the bass a wonderfull mid sound, with a little spring reverb behind it's lovely; very good with the drums too!
The circuit of this wha is simple and searching on the web i found a lot of modifications possible to change the frequencies and resonnance curves adding trimmers and changing values of some capacitors...
i think it can be a good toy for dubbers, adapted in a 1U rack or inna nice box! i'll work on it...
Someone here did modifications to his wah in this direction?
Peace.
Manu

et hop! it's done...
i putit inna wood box, with a big knob for the cut off control (normaly the pedal), a Q knob (resonnance), a gain/ bass response knob, a mid gain control and a 12 positions selector for different range of cut off response now it's a wah for guitars, hihats, bass, keys.... you choose the better sound with the kind of instrument you want to pass inside it....
one day of work for 15euros of material....
good toy! 8-)

Hi ocoughi,

Sounds interesting !
Do you use the wah also as an insert effect ?
Could you post some pics and sound samples ?

yep jahkis,
i use it as an aux...
i'll post some photos soon and a track with a lot of use of it in my reggaedubwise page...
it's not the same way of using it like the "classical" guitarist use... with the guitar you try to have a real "wahwah" sound with quick movements of the foot. I personaly use it more like a cutoff filter with slow movements, making the sound appears and move into his own frequencies...
the result is different from a classic filter or a parametriq eQ; wahs has a unique texture of filtering...

i uploaded anew version in RDW called "give i strengh bent-wah test".
all the guitars and keys passing true this box. sometimes pre reverbs and sometimes post reverbs. the wah sound goes then into a flanger (sbf-235) to get more fatness and stereo...

Just listened your "give i strengh bent-wah test mix" on reggaedubwize.com. The wah sounds great on skanks . Dub siren and spring reverb also sound roughhhhh ! Have to listen to it again on a better sound system currently using headphones :-(
