I spent an evening watching youtube clips yesterday and want to share some favourites. the following clips were recorded at king tubby's studio with prince jammy at the controls. as i understand most of this material comes from a bbc documentary by the name of "deep roots music" which was produced in the early eighties.

enjoy! King

Thanks interruptor.. these are really fine historical clips. I especially like the Johnny Clarke ones. I find it interesting the way that vocals were recorded inside what appears to be a narrow concrete bunker with rough walls. The natural reverb from this would seem to be an important part of the sound.

also it seems the vocal booth had no door. or at least they kept it open for these video recording.
it suprises me that there are 2 microphones set up. i have never seen that for vocal recordings. does anyone have an idea what that could be good for?

the series "deep roots music" was announced for re-release by two different companies simultaneously:

- one company is releasing single dvd's, each containing 2 out of the six parts. so far the dvd with parts 1 and 2 was released:

a second dvd containing parts 3 and 4 is announced for release in january 2008:
http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=7546417
this seems to be the dvd which comes with the bunny lee / prince jammy session that can be seen in the youtube clips on this page.

- the other company anounced a 2 dvd set with all six parts. they moved the release date several times. and yet it seems it's currently not available:

As I just read in the blood&fire forum this second release was cancelled due to license problems:
http://www.bloodandfire.co.uk/db/viewtopic.php?p=168775&sid=eded0e122f40e3554927ac689ddbac67
I surely would have prefered to get all six parts in one single set Smile
but it's nice to see them available anyway!
