hey, I'm trying to find a piece of gear to give me some sounds i've heard on tons of dub records from the late 70's and on ... this is so hard to describe, but if you can imagine those descending-in-pitch, long, percussive "doo" sounds that are all over these records, please let me know if you have any advice on how to get them - people have recommended simmons drums or an 808, but I don't have easy access to these to try one ... thanks

it sounds like your are talking about "electronic toms" ...
Now the question for you thou... do you want to get yourself the actual synth (hardware) or are you searching for just audio-samples. Almost any sample-based midi synth (I said almost!!!) has a set of these samples ...usually in one of drum-kit sets (like electro-kit ...or 808... or dance kit...or what ever they may call it).... ...and , well, they usually sucks compare to original durum-synthesiser ..heh heh, but you get that 'poop-poop-piew -weweweeee ppoops sounds that way - it's good comparing to nothin'
now as you know, the problem with having sample-based sound set is that you can not manipulate them as you can when you have a real original analog drum synth. I used to have simmons SDS-800. It's a hell of an ugly bluewish metal box ..heh heh... and really hard to use from today's point of view (I mean in digital/midi production set-up) - if you never worked with old analog synth/drum modules, but used to digital/midi synth.... then it may take for you some head-scratching time to figure out how the damn thing works, especially with no manual ;-). With analog drum synth you need to use e-trigger pads, and you just can tweak the sounds and keep em ... then play/record in real time.... It's kind of cool if you are into retro :)

if you are searching for just audio samples...then try searching e-toms, or electronic toms, or electronic drum kits samples... etc.
For a real synth - the only way is to find used old one on e-bay or where evr used gear sold...

thanks mike, actually, I wouldn't mind either - I'm just looking for specific items ... samples would be great to play with for starters, but I would love to have a hardware box to use live ... I was hoping someone would say something like "well, mick jones from the clash had a BLA BLA BLA XYZ that he used to use all the time" ... I guess I'm looking for specific items, so I start with the SDS-800 ... I was hoping for something compactly triggerable as well - possibly even wearable ... I guess I could get a hard sampler and an AX-1 ... thanks for the top and please keep 'em coming if you've got 'em :)

Wesman, buying box(es) like simmons for the reason your are after would be a not-so-wise thing to do ..heh heh..., well, if you're vintage gear junkie and you've got a big-pocket ....then sure go for it.
I'd say in today's world (from point of today's technological reality), I'd say go for either:
1. Find some large sample-collection (like CD-Rom or audio-sample CD, some of them aren't cheap btw and some of them cheap and "useless"... it is really hard to know for sure. The selection is huge, you usuallu can get some sample-preview from CD-Rom on the net, but you never really know what's on it)
or
2. If you have so-so good computer system (HD-size/processor/soundcard) and you are 'in peace' with software in general, then Get a good analog-immitation software synth. (For example Minimoog Modular Software). There are few out there now available. They are around $200. As I can tell, if you are into some serious electronic production it is a very good idea to have one on your computer. With soft-synth you can pretty much "recreate" the whole-llot of analog-like sounds - all kinds of bloops and pleeps. Just seat in your 'lab' and create ..heh heh. Then you can sample them , load into your hardware sampler and take it with you on the road. And you see, this way you are not limiting yourself to a set of pre-sampled material.
Now, if you are mad enough , you sure can buy yourself a real Minimoog ..hah hah, then you can just have it all in real analog meat.... generate'n-sweep'n'filter ...make anything you wish - it'll cost you thou :)

pieuvre, that is a right call ! :) PC2 is a real nice lil'thing to create all sorts of peeps and bleeps.... also chaining it with some delay/echo or what have you effects/extra filter etc will give you a some real cool 'mad-dub-box' sort of speak, so you can create all sorts of bleepy sound-effects sounds for dub (you simply can use it as is in live set-up as well)
Here's the page I've found with some audio-samples of this thing: boss pc 2 percussion synthesizer
