I´m looking for an effect found on for example Dub Factor 3 (Dub Judah / Mad Prof) and similar mid-90 UK dub releases, were the delay sounds really digital ("non-destructive") and the delay-time sometimes changes to double or half the time. I havn´t been able to make this effect with any of my vsts or delay units. Any ideas? |

does the pitch change at the same time (echoes sound 1 octave higher or lower)? |

ok.. i just heard the same effect on a macka b record from 1990. i think it was typical for early digital delay units that the delay length was set by varying the clock frequency of the delay buffer. this means that the content in the delay line is just replayed at a different speed after the delay time change. in newer delay units and plugins the clock frequency is fixed for the whole system. the delay time is varied by increasing or decreasing the length of the buffer. if you do this while a repeated echo is going on this will result typically in a stuttering effect with not so nice digital clicks. I just saw in Mad Professor's gear list at ariwa.com that he owns 3 Roland SDE 3000 Delay Units from the mid eighties. These are known to be able to create the effect you want. Reviewer John writes at effectsdatabase.com: "I use it as a great dub delay, that gives a real good alternative to analogue echo or tape delay. has a 2x switch, which makes the echo time double or half(depending on which way you do it)as you hit it. gives incredible echo speeding up fx,very useful in my music arsenal in 2003." i'm not sure how the same thing can be achieved in a plug-in. did you try my bionic or analogic delay? the smooth parameter prevents the digital clicks and you can achieve similar pitch variations when switching between the delay times. it's not possible to switch off the delay degradation by the tape algorithm though. |

thinking about it i just realise that this echo time doubling feature could be easily implemented in a natively programmed plug-in. my plugs so far were realised with synthedit which does does not give the needed freedom to do this. if i find time i may try to develop a dedicated plug-in for your purpose. let's see.. |

sounds great interruptor, thanks a lot! and in the meantime I´ll try to get my hands on one of those Roland units. (and yes, I´ve tried your great vsts but couldn´t get this effect) |

Emanuel, PSP Audioware (http://www.pspaudioware.com/) have three delays: the Lexicon 42 emulation, PSP 84 (like two 42s with extras) and 608 MultiDelay, all of which seem to emulate digital delays and are supposed to be as clean as you want. Maybe try the demos. You can also learn about many more freeware VST plugs at www.kvraudio.com. |

mike: I tried the PSP 84 some time ago and wasn´t really trying to get this specific effect at the time... do you think it cange the pitch along with delay time? |

I honestly do not know Emanuel, I've never tried the demos but they are there to download if you want...and the manual too I think. cheers, M<ike. |

Now I know that PSP 42 has a x2 buttom that works nice. Audiostation´s Dubstation also seems to do the trick. However, I´m sure that you Interruptor can make an even better, dubbier digital pitch-shifting delay and perhaps even give it away for free!?? |
