Does anyone know where I could find out the measurements needed to create a gass bttle xylophone?
I presume there is a certain amount of water which, when put in a two litre bottle will result in an exact 'c', but what is the amount?

i don't think amount of water will be the only "parameter" here :),
really, I guess it also depends on what kind of bottles... what kind of glass it made of etc...
even the same two bottles may sound a bit different.
I think you just need to sort of add water one-by-one and tune it, I think it is possible, especially using modern tunners. I have that little pocket size Korg tuner, for example, it has bult-in mic and special setting, very sensitive thing, I used to tune acoustic guitar with it -works great. and it's like 20-30 $ or so.

good luck building the thing :)

so that will give an acurate reading of the note? good stuff, thanks man. now I need some help polishing off a few bottles of cheap wine......

acurate??? hmmmmm,
it's a kinda hard to say about a 'such instrument', I'd imagine that it is going to be really hard to 100% tune a bottle'of'water, but you can get sort of close.
The reason I also mentioned that Korg tuner, is because it's a cheap little thing and it has two settings for acoustic tunning: slow and fast.
So for short percussive sounds it will work in fast-mode, it reacts almost instantly, there are two red-lights "running around" showing you a note, such as C and tune-as-center position.
I can't find on the net exact the same tuner, but Korg makes a few models, they are like a pocket calculator, or player sort of thing, w/built in mic. Also usually has input, so you can tune some electic instruments, like guitars, or sounds from sampler etc... Must have one :)

Now, don't forget that you also may need to learn how to play bottles... heh heh heh, it'gotta be a hard learning curve... I guess. :)

yeah, it would probably be easier to set up the situation using a sampler.
do you know any software tuning devices?

Mike Zee

software tuners - there buncha'them out, some music software have it as a 'tool'... I never used any thou... just so I never had to. You can find allots of just by searching for "software tuner".
here's example, a fifteen bucks software, also looks like you can d-load it to try-out for free:
Aspire Multi-Instrument In-Tune Tuner
btw, if you have/use sampler, you can just have ONE Bottle - :), sample it and then sequence - you even don't have to play anything, just use piano-roll in your midi-sequencer - heh heh :),
well, if seriously, it's not that simple to get really good result just by sampling one note, you have to do so-called multi-sampling of different notes, and then put them (samples) all together into patch/program - very timely process, I hate doing it, also I am talking about hardware sampler - it's just taks ton of time to program multi-note patches/programs, also to adjust envelope and other parameters ... so it plays back more natural, and not just like choppppy sample-cuts ..grrrrrrrrrrr
other thing, if you still going to try to "build" bottle xyl, I don't think you need to worry about perfect tuning, it has to be somewhat close, this is like a traditional instrument, they are not really 'well-tuned' instruments, and this is what makes them sound so special. Also I think you may try to use variety of sizes: from huge bottles through little drug-container-bottle - ding-ding :), then try to play something out - it may sound MAD ...heh heh
There will be an issue, thou - RECORDING your performance/playing..., getting good mic(s), placing them around, I think you'll need at least two mics and record it to stereo...
You see, there is a big difference between recording single voice, like vocal, or violin, or sax etc... and some instrument, which actually has multi-voice-source, like many things arounds, similar to drums, it's pretty much similar to recording orchestra - well, in a sense, you know.
So if you just record it using one mic, the result if way different from what you may expect hearing actually what you are playing in your room. It's a pain in a neck. Same thing about recording sound of nature etc..., like you go into summer-night forest, and you hear all those amazing sounds-choir of insects, frogs etc...., but if you record it, and then play-back you get something totally different, like very anoying noze instead - :(

well, man, I don't know, this the whole idea id pretty whild, you know,
drop a note here if you get something recorded and have mp3s samples to check-out ....

btw, i was just watchin'those videos at winamp site, here: winamp videos,
there's a moment you've gotta'see to laugh, regarding to 'junky-yard xyl/drum-set', he'sGot some dishes, bottles ... sounding very cheezzzy , heh heh heh, but looks fun'n'cool. It's in Outkast's video, in their "LandOfMillion Drums" - :), check it out if you can watch video on line... :)

yeah, the whole idea is really just to use it for precussion purposes, so the tuning wouldn't have to be perfect, it would be sweet to be able to play a beautiful melody though....I was thinking of just sampling the whole thing and just making a sample program out of it, it would probably be more convientient for storage purposes etc.

yeah, would you be able to help me out with setting up a page where I'd be able to upload my songs. I've no interest in paying for anything and I'd only need about 10MB at the most. Well I'd love 10,000 but then I'm gonna have to pay, right....I don't really know anything about doing this, I just went to geocities and tried to upload my song and it took ages and then my brilliant computer decided to crash..... brilliant computer can't play that video.

You always can set-up free acount at for your mp3s. Well, the only problem is that checking all uploaded mp3s for approval, - the problem is that it takes sometimes very long time from the moment you upload the song to the moment when you actually see it on your page, if you have free account there, this approval may take like few days.
You can try to join
Link to ES
There is an option of having free acount at ES, but it limited to only two songs/mp3s, so another words if you have new song, you wish to make available and you have two tracks already, you'll have to delet one of the songs first.
I don't know what else,
I think you can try (link)
set-up free account there, I think you can have 20MB there for free or so, then you'll have to create some sort of web-site, well, can be something very simple, like a main page (index.html) with links to your mp3s. I am not sure if they let you just post mp3s thou... well, why not?, as I remember they used to afraid people to start posting illigal mp3s. But if so, you can zip files. Or just try to upload mp3s and see if it works. One thing about - you can not link to files on your account/directory from other locations on the net, like you can not place d-load link on the b-board, if you do, it will just take you to some main page. You'll have to send people to visit your page, and d-load files from there, so they SEE the banner :),.... well, that's the way free servers works, stil heh heh, I think days of free servers on the internet are numbered... use them while it there, sort of speak...

Respect bin_ez,

Cha, sampling would be easier but like dem seh "dub wasn't meant to be easy." Or is that life? Oh well, what's the diff'rence - dub is life / life is dub.

I seh make bottle xylaphone and learn to play it. Jus for something dif'rent. you don't haffe be totally acurate wi the tuning, jus get a good vibes.

PS: Other tings come in bokkles than wine. Don't drink alkyhole it rot nulls the senses and dumbs the mind. Member "Babbylon mek the wine to blow di ppl mine. Jah Jah mek di Herb to soothe di pppl mine."
But whatever mek you happy. Cheers.

Any of you happen to watch Euronews last night? There was a girl playing classical music using a variety of glasses of different shapes and sizes with water in them.
It was great. You know how if you wet your finger and move it along the rim of a glass with a stem it gives that ringing sound? Well it was like that. It was fantastic!
Euronews is available on the internet but unfortunatly they don't seem to have an archive. Does anyone know anything about this girl, she has a CD out called Crystal Bells, I think, although that doesn't sound right somehow.

I have see three guys do that on the market place in Lausanne (the nearest city to me).
It's very crazy, the speed of the movement, it's a real symphony.

I have see both "xylophone water" and "finger on glass", the second sounds better ;-)

Jah Bless,

Rubbing glasses only works with crystal glasses. At least I'm pretty sure of that. Just tried it with a normal glass and no sound.

Shouldn't they be called crystals not glasses then? :)
