DUB SIREN
fullsize screenshot

download page

this VST plugin for the windows platform emulates a dub siren plus a tape delay unit.

features:

- simple synthesizer architecture with 1 oscillator and 2 independent LFOs (LFO1: rectified sine LFO2: pulse) additional chopper circuit to mute the sound during the low phase of LFO2

- tape delay emulation with highpass and lowpass filter in the feedback path. adjustable simulation of tape hiss (useful for endless delays at high tape saturation levels).

- all parameters controllable by midi controllers #20 - #32

i created this siren with synthedit a shareware modular synthesizer for the pc.
the tape emulation is provided by dr schmitt's free plugin
"js magneto".

it should run on any windows platform since win98 and on any VST compatible host software like Logic, Cubase, Synthedit..

I would be very glad about any feedback regarding it's performance on other systems than mine. Also suggestions for additional features are very welcome.

peace & love

good job daniel!
the switch "shop" is really nice.

I think your siren have the same default as mine, the sound could be more phat!
it would be a good to have a kind of an harmonics generator ar something like this.

well done!

Yeah just installed it sounds pretty good. What I like about it is its basic operation. Although you
can make sounds similar to this on most software emulators you always end up spending to long playing with all the different parameters. This does exactly what you want it to, could do with an envelope to control the attack & decay of the output but apart from that, V good.

Greetings Interruptor,

well done, I like the sownd of Your siren. Aren´t You thinkinking about separating the tape delay part of it into dedicated VST? Would be nice, especially if You add more heads...

munky:
i'm surprised that you feel your own real analog siren is missing phatness. i remember a sample of an original dubsiren on the disciples' or jah tubby's website where the siren sounded very thin because there were no reverb and delay effects on it. isn't it the effects and probably just the sheer volume when played over a sound system that make it sound phat? what do you mean by harmonics generator? something like an overdrive or distortion feature?
in fact the basic waveform used for the siren is based on a short sample taken from an early jah shaka album on which he used siren effects.
i tried out different ways to apply distortion to the sample in order to make it sound more aggressive/dramatic. However i felt that it works best in it's original state.

Version:
i think that an attack and decay control is not very useful on a dub siren. i cannot remember having heard any dub siren with something else than just the typical organ-type envelope.

Syncro:
i allready thought of releasing the delay as a separate unit. using several heads results in something like a multitap delay which is rarely used in dub music. but it wouldn'be difficult to do so i'll give it a thought..

ahahaha! but that is true! I think that my siren does not have the phat sound!

> and probably just the sheer volume when played over a sound system that make it sound phat?

it might be possible.

yes, an harmonic generator like a distortion unit. I always run my siren through a distortion unit, and it sounds really good!

Are there any Fruityloop users around here who tried out this plugin? does it work for you?

kid skipper: i don't know FL studio 4 nor the oxygen8, but i think you should try to narrow down the problem: can you control other plugins with the midi keyboard? if no, find out how this is done from the FL manual. if yes check whether you can automate plugin control moves within FL.

Posted on Tuesday, December 02, 2003 - 12:02 pm:

yes, i can control every effekt or plugin via right-click and then 'link to controller', then i move the controller on my keyboard and then the controll is set up to this potie on my keyboard.
but i'm not able to right-click on the siren. maybe fruity doesn't work that good, do you suggest any other programm you know for supporting this problem?

kid skipper: i just realise that somebody else encountered the same problem when using fruityloops with my tape delay plugin. see the post by bwoyo on this page. the right click menues in FL do not work with my plugins. i cannot change this since i use a special tool to create the plugins which does not give me access to this feature.
as a workaround try to automate the plugin directly with midicontroller messages from your oxygen8. the midi controller numbers you have to use are written beside each pot on the dub siren's interface (#20 - #32).

hope that helps..

yeah, i already tried this way, but the plugin doesn't respond. i will try some different programs,
can you suggest any? because i want to have that operator feeling and moving the cursor isn't really authentic.
and could you eventually sent me the .se1-files
of your plugins, because im interrested in programming plugs.

i will not give away the source code of the plugs now. maybe in the future or if you have a pretty good offer for it.

I had a post at my useless b-board from some unknown unnamed "Jah-Love" propagandist ..., he said: "There's No Peace for The Wicked..."
..so, all I could do was to reply: "No Peace!" - IS The Word of The Wicked.
Evil got no root. Evil is 'the root' upon himself - the root for a sin. Evil is Evil. ;)
HM, right!, it is very simple. Money is really nothing more than a "record" of 'personal DID' in a universal exchangable form.
X-amount of 'DID' behind the 'source code'. You wanna code?, then share some of your personal record of DID. :)

check the next few lines of the lyrics:

"Some steal it, some kill for it
Some do iniquity for it
It makes friends, it break friends
Judas betrayed Christ for it"

i think his point is just that money is the motivation for many bad things happening. he does not claim that money cannot be the root of good things.
but he had a song to sell, so he needed an unforgettable punch-line.. as you can see, money was also the root of coming up with such an evil song title ;-)

Hi. What can you use this VST plug-in with? Does it work with like FruityLoops, or do you need special software and hardware?

VST plugins work with any VST compatible host. Fruity Loops is fine too, although one user reported problems with the automation of parameters (he said the pop-up menues for each control on the user interface did not work)

2) Is any manual available to the dub siren ?

The Dub Siren is a VST-instrument not an effect. Therefore you should read this paragraph from the Audiomulch FAQ:

Q: How can I sequence or control VST instrument plugins from within AudioMulch?
A: AudioMulch currently only allows VST instruments to be controlled from an external MIDI source such as another MIDI sequencer, or a hardware MIDI controller keyboard. You can select which MIDI channel(s) a plugin will receive from the plugin contraption's node in the Parameter Modulation dialog, available from the Control menu. For further information see the question "How can I route MIDI from other software to AudioMulch?"

Well there is i think a solution to this problem.
Tweak some parameter with your mouse click on the little menu (top left of the vst window(fruity wrapper)) select last used parameter>link to controller and your done, at least i think so ..
don't have courage for checking but the last used parameter thing is always usefull when u have a vst that does not react when right-clicking on tweaks...

hi jacky,

i don't have an apple to try it out. does the development kit convert pc vsts to audio unit? in that case just go ahead. but i have my doubts. "development kit" usualy means a programming environment to develop something. it could just be a C-library. so porting the plugin to the mac wouldn't be any easyer than creating a new one from scratch.

I can not big up the tape delay enough!

recently however, i have encountered a problem.
i bought a digi 001 from a friend and have now discovered that there is not an RTAS version of this amazing plugin.

am i wrong about this?

i have heard about a Vst to RTAS converter.
i dont know where to get it from though.

if you could mail me i would be very grateful

I don't watch much TV, and I did'nt find out about chavs from the TV set.

Chavs are not "media bollocks", but a visible reality in the UK. I should know, since my town appears to have become a chav repository.

See: www.chavtowns.co.uk

This is a dub reggae discussion forum - not a d'n'b/jungle one. Dub is difficult to do: it's not a question of stringing a breakbeat together with prefab'd loops in FastTracker.

I'm not here to discuss jungle/d'n'b with some chav so that's that for me.

Oh and crooked, don't cross the road before you look. You might be biting off more than you can chew.
