I hooked up the fisher reverb to my mixer and had the signal come back through the effect returns--the signal was too quiet and had no real character. So I ran them into an empty channel instead and with the right eq it sounded great. However, the signal still lacked volume. When I skipped the reverb stage and just had the preamp runnin the result was definetely loud. So why the loss of volume?? Any tips?

i didn't perceive the volume as too low on my unit. however since my aux send has not so much headroom i use an additional preamp before the spacexpander preamp.
did you make sure the volume is completely open on the separate potentiometer?
there are different ways to connect this thing: as it was originally meant to be connected to a hifi-system you can configure it to get a mixture of input signal and effect or just the effect alone. you can also use the right or the left channel of the preamp. just try the different possibilities, probably this solves your problem.

I'll start messing around further with the configuration and i'll post an update. The thing is though, I don't think it's the preamp but rather the spring that's lowering the volume. When I push the switch on the preamp from Reverb only to Center or (whatever the other position is) then the volume is normal, it's just when I select it to go through the reverb that there is a decrease. Is it possible there is some sort of mismatch in the impedance of the spring unit and the preamp?

The volume issues aren't even that bad and overall I have to say the spacexpander has a fantastic tone, straight out of dub records.

maybe you don't have the original spring tank?
mine is labeled with the written "spacexpander" logo.

I certainly don't have the original tank--I forgot to mention. I hooked it up to an Accutronics tank. It's the 8 ohm 4 spring tank that is the most common one. Interruptor, do you have the manual for the Spacexpander?

no, it's just samples and a wahwah effect. i love the sound of the clavinet since i heard it first on early peter tosh songs.

Do you have any program which can make .pdf(s). I thought it would be a sort of less work to make this kind of documents available on the net, instead of coding web-pages. I am not pro in the field, but I have CorelWorldPerfect, which can simply import scans into pages and then in one click save the file as .pff, it takes few mins really.
The other though came to mind, just btw... would it be possible (and if you think it's any good idea), if you careate an area at this site, where us(users) can maybe contribute some vintage manuals, sacans, schematics etc, related to dub-production, similar the way guys contribute techniques. You know, this may become a very unique collection of manuals, schematics, studio-setups drawings with descriptions etc... in .pdf format. Problem of course will be a storage space for stuff like that....
well, just a thought....

indeed space is a problem. i got 25 MB here and i will use this space for my own music and some more vst plugins. also creating a gallery with a dedicated tool is not so much work. a gallery can be easily accessed by everyone also people on low bandwidth. so more people will browse through it and come accross hilarious bits like: "Until the introduction of the FISHER Spacexpander, all home music systems whether monophonic or stereo, suffered from one basic shortcoming - (...) they were unable to recreate the acoustics of an actual performance. Now with the FISHER Spacexpander (...) this last barrier to total realism has been overcome."

hi. my fisher operating instruction manual is quite different from yours. older or newer i don t know but on page 2 i found this fun notes: Remember,the fisher spacexpander is designed-specificaly for home music systems and not for commercial recording,broadcasting or industrial installations or for use with amplifing attachments for musical instruments like guitars or electronic organs. information regarding connections to systems other than home music types will not be supplied..... now i feel guilty....... audioforge
