yamaha presents a new vocal synthesis software called vocaloid. they claim it can generate authentic vocal lines based on lyrics and a melody supplied by the user.
the audio demos are impressive.

I am sure this will be used a lot for backing vocals. Not so self-respecting producers will not shy away from using it on lead vocals too.. (i am thinking of dance/trance and similar placebo music)

also it must be fun to go beyond what a real singer could do with such a program - experimental stuff..

price will be around 300 US$/Euro for one voice font and the software. two packages "leon" and "lola" featuring a female and a male soul voice will be available from jan-20 at zero-g

In a sense it's like having/or using singer vocal sampling CD-library...(which I actually did for dance-trax, I've used famous and overused everywhere Vocal-Bytes-II ..heh heh), but this one is shall I say "customizable" lyrics-wise.
I am sure it'll become a useful tool in combination with other toys for techno/dance and such type of music. I see it actually as a very useful tool for composing, laying out your song-writing ideas, send it to a real performer instead of bunch of notes and writings on paper..or midi-files.
I am sure it will be obused as well...just give it a time.... ;)

btw, I could not play any samples from the site's audio-samples page... what ever format they are... click and nothing is happening. I've saved target as... looks like asf files which would not play... hmmmmmmm

I don't know, but to call this 'impressive' ??? no way. Well, from point of view of what computer can do - OLLLA-LA ...this maybe IS impressive. From musical production point - this is pure crap..., man, sorry. Geee, AveMaria- really sucks , grrrrrrrrr, imagiine You make something like this as your production ....whewewew :down:
Again, can you do some obusive things ...I guess yes. Is it worth of money and effort - absolutely NOT. Better spend extra 300 bux on extra mic preamp ...or save for better mic... or even find a real local singer/performer, who would be happy to let you record and use voice/vocals for your productions, pay $300 for an hour session, sign a mini-contract/aggreement (just to cover you a*s) record same samples, vocal lines etc and make some experimental/dance/or what ever tracks....
However, I really can see this. All the commersial producers are going to jump on this and will be using it to produce their 15 sec. commercial with no needs to invest into real performe/voice over artist.

i listened to the samples that were available some months back. i specifically remember a singer/songwriter tune with female backing vox. the backing vox really did not sound like computer generated which was unthinkable before. indeed most of the demos suck musically but that is the case with ANY synth or sample cd as well, since demos are always geared to a mainstream audience. we are both not part of that audience otherwise we wouldn't be writing on a dub board.. :-)

but actually I didn't mean 'musical / composition part" of the demos I've heard of Lola. I mean the actual 'result', the way the voice sound, the feel of it, expression...etc... Daniel, download AveMaria track, if you didn't hear it.

And I can imagine how much work it may take to 'sequence' AveMaria using this software...it must be at least a novice level of production... and the result is - grrrrrrrrrrrrr ..poop, softly speaking.
Again, I think maybe some creative use of this software maybe useful for serious production, mixing it with real performer, or use these 'voces' simply to create some 'unnatural' sound texture, where you can actually incorporate some "words/lyrics"...then maybe extra process etc..., could be cool for techno/electronic/experimental trax.

well, let's give it a time...to see where does it go...;-)
