hi my name is jimmock i am a bass & keyboard player most of my music (when i am on my own)is very much dub reggae sca & funk orientated. what i am looking for to get the best out of my music is a wav sample cd on dub reggae. i run fruity loops 4 software and cakewalk pro audio.so if there is someone that can help me in any way to get me out of a rutt i will be in your debt. my dream in life is to jam with a top dub reggae band so big up the people who brung dub music to the world

i'm not really up to date with the latest sample cds. my previous experience was that most "construction kit" based sample cds for a specific music style are perfectly fitted for people who need to quickly create music for commercials - but not much more.. therefore i advise you to listen to a sample cd before buying it.

i personally like the sound of the handplayed drumloops on a sample cd called "virtual band - roots reggae" which is not sold anymore.
but part of these sounds can be bought as a download

bill laswell's dub tactic manual is now available as a multiformat cd with wav files included. the price is lower than the audio cd - this makes me think they probably only used part of the original content.

i once listened to this one and was surprised to dind out that most if not all drum loops here are sequenced and sound rather synthetic.

sly dunbar is a great drummer and he had a leading role in the reggae undustry for many years without any doubt.

but i am not a big fan of the "Sly Dunbar Drumsplash". The acoustic drumloops are recorded in below average quality and the dancehall loops are from around 1993. dancehall has changed in these 11 years..

if you look for typical programmed sly&robbie loops and sounds from the early nineties the cd is good.

also the snare drum intros are usable.

i am refering here to the first release of the cd. since some time there is a remastered version around.
in this description you can read that they have now optimized the drum loops using equalization, removal of excess room ambience and timestretching. you can imagine what the cd was like before if this was necessary..

also i ask myself why they didn't just hire the man for another few hours and tape a new set of properly recorded loops!

from my experience... for what ever reason, but as for today, REALLY good reggae sampling CDs simply don't exist

, not to meantion that there are very very little of reggae sampling CDs period. There's ton on d'n'b, break-beat, vary drum-loops, tech, house etc etc..., huge amount of hip-hop (doooh)(some of them are exellent, btw... Loopzilla series is so cool you can simply listen it as is ;)..he he). The CDs mentioned above are alright... but really they contain allots of stuff you'll never want to use for anything.
Dub basics - is pretty cool thou... but it would be very useful for creating all sorts of downtempo fusion tracks/chillout stuff, but hardly for DUB-reggae.
The only explanation for this, I can think of, is that for some reason good reggae drummers/performers have no interest in creating sampling CDs while producers don't see this field as marketable.
S&R could produce absolute supreme library, but would they? My speculation is: they don't give a sh*t ..he he he

As for now, for us there are these options: Use individual drum samples and sequence 'dead breathless tracks' ... or get a drum-set and learn one-drop yourself, which only may sound as simple thing ..

Yes,.. well,.. I have the old one,.. thanks for
telling this, I intend to get the best out of it
anyway, so I also do with killer-horns, I figure
it is a good way getting familiar with my "new"
www.vsampler3.com besides I will not be able to
inroduce real drums in near future,.. I thought
actually that drumsplashs was "the creme" but it
sounds now more like that I am a unikum in case
I get something good out of it :-) 100 euro :-(

Anyway sample-CD´s never realy appeared to me,.
but for the reasons mentioned above I consider
to use,.. what I dislike is that the loop does
determin the "procces" far to much, however in
the sly case I whant live this out completely
and simply sit listen the riddim´s and let the
riddims be the main inspiration to build on

As I hear it is old Black Uhuru tracks and such
so they got names like "sitting" , "commin" ,
"slaughter" , "puff" , "wicked" , "guess" ,
"red", "shine" , "mystic",.... etc. etc.

Guess it could be fun to see where these old
riddims could take me 10-20 years later, there
is the single drum sounds also, some ok, any-
way it will give me deeper insight in vsampler
at the same time, while I still hope for a
future with real instruments foremost,......

Actually with a little good connections it IS
possible to hire a REAL horn-section, if ones
material is worked out good, I will try with
killer-horns but I have a bad feeling already
now, and most certainly I will be carefull not
to use to much time getting autenthic phrase,
it will never be, it was not made for me ;-)

about horns: i just ordered a akai disc for trumpet, trombone and french horn (xsample cd3) hope this helps to improve my horn riffs which sound pretty saxophoney up to now - sax is the only horn i can play (hear confident dub as an example).

it's alto sax + melodica but i don't remember how many voices of each. there may also be some acoustic piano multisample playing the same line at a low level.
it's just a 32K stream because i am limited on server space and also because i want people on slow lines to be able to listen..

Long time didn't go here...

I have hear somethings like "loopwise.com" which provide Sample Cd make by Messian Dread but i really don't know the quality...

In all case.. sample is bad, make your own vibes... make you riddim !

It's much easy to build a beautifull riddim than found a good sample CD that fit with your style...

Just my point of view.

Respect to all,

I bought Soundscan 27 and really did not like it. I found very little usable material on that disc. One real dissapointment was there are only 3 basslines on there and none of em was any good.

The Laswell CD is a mixed bag but I found some nice things in there. The basslines are mostly too low pitched to be used in anything but ambient but many of the rythm and FX tracks can be good background layers.

PowerFX's "Roots, Raw, Reggae" has been my best score so far. Lots of usable drum, bass, guitar and keyboards. Pretty much nothing for horns though.

Truth be told I still have not found a good collection of horns but I have not spent much time on it either
