Hey, I use the clean tone on my amp and it sounds to clean and not what I'm looking for. So what tones are usually used in Reggae and or dub?

John, what cab/amp/combo do you have? if any?
From my experience (not a big deal of experience ;) btw)...
I pretty much completely gave up on trying to get guitar recordings by using digital floor processors/pedals and directly recording trough to inst/line in through the mixer. I've used Digitech RP , ZOOM, vary Boss pedals. This is kind of cool, especially if you are trying to create some new/strange sounds.... but overall - it's all just does not do.
I am in process of looking for a combo cab, but it's hard to make a decission. Cabs which look(i mean sound) great are damn expansive. You also need couple, maybe three mic(s) ...one for close pickup and couple different for distant/room....then there will be a job to do: finding a tone, placing mics and tweaking mixer's chnls/eq, also may need and extra compressor.
When I get to this...then I may have something to say. Don't expect soon... but this is one of my new-year plans ;)

I use a Fender Frontman 25R. and for effects I use my Digitech RP200.

Well, man, again, don't take me as even near expert on guitar recording. Yeah, I've done tone of recordings myself...but all throigh digital effect - direct-to-mixer -path ... and it sucks... my openion anyway.
In general for reggae rhythm/and/or/skankin' you play clean guitar. You sure can experiment with overdrive chnl... but bassicly go clean...add some reverb, experiment with eq on the 25R.
You need shure sm57 mic, close position...and would be nice if you can add second mic (condenser mic to pick more distant sound or room ambience, you need to experiment with placing this one, you can try to place it behind the amp or few feet infront, or above etc...)...then mix both together recording on one track...or recording on separate tracks and mixing later. Takes some experimenting.
You don't need to use rp200 at all actually for guitar recording. And did I meantion that these digital guitar processors sucks ... ;) heh heh?
I have rp6 by digitech. These things are only good, because you can play/record with headphones at home and nobody around hears you.... that's it.

Now as you can see, it turns out you'll have to get good mics.... and also mic's preamp becoms an issue here. If you are happy with mic preamp on your mixer...then it's ok... but again, it all depends on your expectations.
The complete set for 'succesful' guitar recording is:
1. Guitar
2. Player (you must be able to actually play well

)
3. Amp/Combo
4. Mic(s) plus mic placing techniques
5. Mic preamp and also nice to have a dedicated compressor (optional)
6. Recording device

Basically, what i do- put pickup switch ( on a stratalike ) on either the neck or the bridge pickup- (none of these in-between sounds), dependent on whether you want a mellow or aggressive tone...add lots of reverb...put through, in this order - a wah pedal - a delay pedal - a phaser pedal.
this way you can get some intresting delayed wah sounds, but the delays are constantly changing in tone.
...sorry not really the actual question but hey..
also a nice tone is the way you play it- i listen to a lot of dubs where the guitar sound isnt going to set the world on fire, but its the way they play makes you sit up and take notice.

incidentally i play in a crappy local band-
but which of these is the bes name for it
1.dubosaurus
2.raggasaurus

ie which sticks in the mind more?

I play a Epiphone Casino through a Peavy Classic 30 tube amp. When recording: I keep the bass on the amp around 5, the mid at 6-7, and the high at 6-7. I also sometimes turn the boost up on the amp to give it a nice crunch but no distortion. Recording the amp load is also key. Typically, a SM57 angled right at the speaker cone a few inches away records great. I also will use a vintage shure mic (pre-SM57) sometimes which has brighter sound. As for effects when playing live I always use a delay, spring reverb, wah. How I set them and configure them is my sercret ;)
