Hi al.
Here's a serious question. This is not to just jokin'around. I had this idea for a while..but am not sure if it'd go anywhere. What do you think?
Here's the idea. If there was a sample collection CD in full studio audio-quality audio-CD format, containing 60-70 mins (up to 99 tracks). Each track to be as a set of individual samples of typical sounds for dub productions.
There are sections of the CD each containing samples of sounds played/sent through a specific spring reverb unit or guitar amp with spring/mic chain.
In each spring reverb section there will be instruments sub-sections like: drum samples, quitar, synth/pianos/other instruments and misc. efx sub-section.
Each subsection will contain individual samples as a single CD-track, which starts with dry sample wollowing with samples sent through a reverb unit with vary settings of reverb level/eq.
The actual sounds to be like various individual drum samples, combination of drum samples, guitar/piano/synth skanks, guitar string picks (like muted guiar string pic for example).

This is not to be containing any loops, riddims, grooves or lines. Another words the whole idea of this sample collection is to have various sounds collection and real spring renditions of them for producers who use computer based sequensing/production tools or midi-samplers.
***********
Ok, I know that everything at the end depends on actual quality of a such collection. But let's say if it is GOOD, do you think producers may actually buy a such 'product' if it is not attached to any of 'big shot name' in dub like S&R, MP, LSP etc....
Let's say if it priced somewhere around $29-$39...
***********
Thoughts? I would appreciate. If I ever decide to actually put it together, then it would be a big job not to mention that I'll have to do some shopping and spending on "collection" some vintage units.

You should deffinately, make it as a joint-
venture with a aready developed libreary,
and the idea is only good for drums, still
you would only sell a few ones, as for the
mix as a "total picture" the more diffrent
verbs in parralel the more confused the
picture get, wonder if the spring in NI´s
reaktor 4 suite is any good, it´s the only
virtual reverb that we have not evaluated yet

anyway I left reaktor at ver 2.2.3 due to
challenge response

HM, hi..thanks for droppin' a thought

the idea mainly to target I'd say hobbiest or maybe pro-producers who make all sorts of music on 'commercial demand' ...but they are not specificly 'hardware'wise set for dub reggae field and rely on computer/sampling based production.
But agin, this the whole deal is the most useful for guys who love to "simply" seat infront of computer screen, drag-n-drup files from folder into their fancy application, spend hours and hours rearanging samples into tracks etc...
I can hardly imagine a serious dub producer who really would nee or find useful a such collection. Be a head-in dubster and not to have few dusty springs in your studio ..hmmmmm, I don't know, heh heh it's kind of strange or silly ...that is...
make it as a joint-
venture with a aready developed libreary

hmmmmmmmm. well, I know exacty why you mentioned this. But, man...no way in hell. not me. I've wasted soooooooooo much preciuos time in the past just communication with these gooons. You'll have to deal with some college graduate a&r or 'marketing representative', who for 4 years was playing basketball, guitar in a party band and was taking scuba diving courses on the shores of California for extra credit-points, and now will avaluate the marketability of your product, then you waste time dealing with the whole lot of leagal junk...and etc etc and at the end after all the hard work and cash "investment" IF! you finally get through, you'll make them richer and get back couple of dime-tips on the table with dirty dishes and leftovers...
No way.
You do it all by yourself on don't do it at all.

joint venture becourse why do all this proccesing
on bad source-material, and making good sources
might take the rest your life, anyway most this work is extremely boring, I would say like this:
if you make you self a library of decent of cleared samples, you might go the last way and
release it, I wouldn´t, neither would I release
sounds or athmospheres that was associated to
me self, these cards I would keep tight, like
releasing the single hit´s from my drumset in
case it becomes very typical to my sound, any-
way I wouldnt, but go ahead if you have to :-)

well, that's if you are at the point when you feel like the "game" must go on. What if you getting to the point of "The Game is over"...or about to be over...?:)
I mean, I understand your point. But! Do you really think that releasin a library of individual sounds may somehow become a hole in your unique sound-signature-pocket? Do you think you've got allot to lose there. Even if you cut a bunch of single individual samples from "Dark Side Of The Moon" - there's absolutely NO way you can become Pink Floyd....even sound-wise. See what I mean.
Not to mention, that as I can see it, from professional sample-based production point of view, all those so called "name-signature" collections are a joke, it's all about marketing. The best and most useful libraries are 'nameless' and don't represent any band/artist sound-signature. They are just good libraries which are focused on useability... also there are very few good once out there...
So in my specific case here the focus is on the sound of collection of specific vintage gear. The actual source is secondary important. The source should be focused on dub/reggae usability however...and this is a task to face as well, but it should be very basic source, like basic most popular electronic drumkits, and some basic acoustic drum-kits (mostly going around kik and snare), some basic chord-skanks on vary instrmnts and e-guitar.
Yeah, allot of work, but doable. To achieve good recording quality isn't a problem, really...

well, again, I guess the biggest question for me is ...why to do all this. This isn't for illusional big-$$$$. But it would really suck if at the end it's a total waste of time and useless...

ps

Drum-box is long-term, I have to find free/
cheap materials over time, no I don´t work
on spring-circuitry, just mentioned becourse
you got that tank, I did bye the spring-king
to save time, I have been tired and half-sick
lately, sleeping to much, have some painfull
dessisions to make also such as keeping my boat
or not :-( the mid-way crisis I spare you :-)

So laze-down and meditate, visit "long-time-no-see" friends/family, a few new contact´s in
the music-field to add something possitive, the web-page I consider also before miss-using the
time left, read some book´s like this ,... etc.

in othe words almost non-productive

geeee, i must recommend this to read to my wife :)
heh heh... she's got a problem..ohhhhhh man ;-)
you know what's funny... I am actually in the middle of the construction project in my basement...which I've started to fight 'deppression-build-up' somewhere on the back of my mind. I have a pretty large space in my basement...the section where all the utilities/boiler/oil=tank etc are.., and to go to my studio-room, I always have to pass through that part of the basement.... and it is ugly ..depressingly ugly. It is filled with bunch of junk, tools, parts, useless books, carton-boxes with hell knows what inside..llots of dust all the time ;... grrrrrrrrr. So having to see it a many times a day is creating some sort of 'haevy image of leaving in some sort of junk house. At first you may think that this can not crate any problems...but over years it looks like it DOES. I gues I am a 'visual mind type' - my image of the world is what I see..., you know.
My wife collects junk like a maniac, she's a person who would keep a user-manual for a coffe-maker for 10 years or longer, even thou the coffe-make's life-time is about 3-5 years maximum, especially if I use it...:). There's no way I could fight this....
So I've decided to split this space into two.... the half I am walking through to be a nice clean room...and to built separating wall ..there behind the wall are sheves with all the crap.... so I neven see it again ...NEVER!!!!!!!!!!! lol

Allright, man,
take care yourself... do something phisically...it takes tensions from brains. Works for me.

truth be told, I dont think I'd buy a CD like that. Its already a problem when I get a sample CD that has lots of pre-processed sounds because it takes so much work to get them to fit into anything else.
