I was trying to emulate the typical King Tubby
rim shot effect sound for years until
Mel Gray (aka Eating Betty) told me that
spring reverbs have this very typical sound.

Are there other people out there who have
tried out spring reverbs and could tell me
about their experiences? Which reverb units would
you particularly suggest?

I got this DUB Technique FAQ

here you can find the technique for creating Tubby style snare and hats

You need a spring reverb and a parametric EQ on either your desk or as standalone unit. Place the EQ after the spring reverb.
Boost the midrange of the EQ to the max. Make the Freq knob broadband between 5Khz and 200Hz if possible.
Open the aux to your spring reverb on the snare and the hihat channel on your desk and start tweaking Freq knob on the parametric EQ. And voila … Tubby style hats and snare. Works also very well on the skanks.

There have been a few of these "Great British Spring" reverb tubes on ebay lately that some guy's been selling. Check out the link below for an auction thats going on right now. I was thinking about getting one, but i think the guy wants a little too much for whats really a piece of pvc pipe with springs strung in it. The seller admits they're "cheap" and says they're perfect for dubbing too. I just got a furman rv-1 for well under the buy in now price for this reverb. But what do i know? People have been buying them.

Hi, I was wondering if anyone is aware of HDB Audio from Germany. They make a fantastic Tube/Valve Spring Reverb that is in a rackmount case. The sound is great with the nice added warm touch from the valves. I use two of them in my studio and wouldn't go without them. The are really great value for money. There are others out there for 3 times the price. I actually am the distriutor for these products so they are available from me.

There is a US stereo spring head (I'll find out what it's called) that I nearly wet my pants over a few years a go - thankfully the hangover wasn't too bad so I didn't buy it! Big money.
But I still have to experience plate reverb which a friend of mine has access to in a studio not too far from home. It is a big plate. Really a big plate of brass or whatever. Digital does kind of suck in some ways doesn't it?

Demeter s new stereo spring reverb is a clean sounding box(can use it in stereo like all verb should be, or dual mono ,or linked mono)
U can filter it whithout noise
I would suggest an envelloppe follower filter on it
whith snare or rimshot sound;
HDB tube triple spring verb is a good choice too
Produce good tubby sound whith wahwah skank
and preamp very cool for too clean hihat/snare;
Good hudge bass reverb sound never found yet!
