You can use "ampcast" --> www.ampcast.com

Ampcast is a service you pay for. The good thing is you can have pages without add-banners and you can sell red book standard CDs of your music via ampcast (this means real full quality Audio CDs, not CDs made from uncompressed MP3 files).

Another option is http://www.mp3.com . There you can have a free service based on banner adds on your page. You can also sell CDs via mp3.com but only DAM-CDs (these are the ones made from expanded mp3 files).

A similar program as mp3.com is offered by http://www.besonic.com . The advantage here is that they are less picky about samples in your music. (My music is on Besonic because mp3.com didn't want to believe me that I really own the copyright on the material I recorded in Jamaica)

Well I think that's the problem with any webpage: After you created it first nobody will care.. Apart from wanting to learn about Dub this was initially the reasons why I started this whole site!

peace & good luck with your music

There are several services to release your (mp3) music. Here are the ones I know with some personal evaluations:

1. www.mp3.com: Possibility to release music for free or payed "Premium" service with "Payback for Playback". The "Premium artist" service is expensive, not worth to invest for most non-professional artists. No payback for the free service except CD sales. CDs can be created virtually, but only in mp3 quality (no red book). However, mp3.com has a huge audience and the site is working quite good most the time. Bad support when you have problems and popup windows all the time. Anyway still a good mp3 server.
2. www.besonic.com: Free music release and a payed service as well. You can create CDs similar to mp3.com. Good feature: You can set a price for song downloads. Great support when you have problems. Big audience. Worth to register.
3. www.ampcast.com: No free music uploads, high fee. Possibility to release *real* CDs (red book). Too expensive for hobby musicians.
4. www.javamusic.com: Free service, similar to besonic, but with payback for every download. They are not accepting new artists at the moment.
5. www.digitalsounds.de: Free upload, no CDs, no payback. Small site, small audience, good personal support.

I was asked where one should go to publish music online. I know that mp3.com and besonic.com are dead now. What are the best choices at the moment? I think versionist.com is good, isn't it? Any other choices?

thanks for your thoughts!

I still use http://www.soundclick.com to publish something like a track for free d-load in the case if I don't want to take space/bandwidth from my own site... I have free account there, it works ok, you can publish 128kbps tracks with no limits, also there's paying upgrade/option there.
I also still have account at http://www.ArtistLaunch.com , which isn't free but pretty good site if you wish to publish your music but do not have your own site to do so, artistlaunch.com also has very good CD-publishing/distribution program. I don't think I am going to re-new the account thou...simply because I am going to focus on running my site and publish there what ever I release in the future.
also, Daniel, mp3.com actually still exist in a different form ... I actually have a page there, but I don't even ever look into it. The domain was purchased by cnet.com and now part of their 'cloude'. As I know, artists can create acount there and upload mp3s... as I recall the process and interface there is pain-in-the-as*..., also you have to upload 192kbs files and I don't think they have streaming options ...only download. http://www.mp3.com - see for yourself ;-)
Overall, the way I see it, it just makes perfect sence to get your own domain and get some isp package which let's you have large amount of files and has enough bandwidth to deal with mp3 streaming/d-loads. For around $70/year or so you can do this (maybe even much less if you search through available isp services).
But then again, if paying for hosting is too much for you, then free OMD-like site is an option. Paying for OMD-account and not having your own site - this is something I would not recommend nowdays. If you have 50-100 bucks a year, then put it into building your own website, get your own domain and keep it unchanged - over time your site will get somewhat better 'visablity' on the internet, and then of course, you can put sime time, energy and if you will - cash into promoting your site, and the bottom line is - you promote your site, but not some page at some OMD.com, which you have no control over and you don't even know if it will exist tomorrow... see what I mean?

Daniel, I guess I missed something about mp3.com ... meaning, that mp3.com site is just a bunch of info/promo crap now... the place on cnet , where artists can upload track is actually in downoad.com ... http://www.download.com
It's all part of the same network...ahhh, what ever .... at download.com ...you click "music" tab ...then on the buttom of the page there's link "artist upload your music" ... and there I guess you get to some sign up page or what ever....

I'd just like to get Soundclick mentioned again.

Nobody's likely to find your stuff on their if they are just browsing the site. But its easy to give people the address to go to straight to your pages.

For a free service I think its great. You can write whatever you like about your act and add a picture of your choosing. Your Mp3's can be downlowdable or not according to your choice. They can also be streamed lo-fi for dial up connections or at the full 128/kbs for broadband. You get statistics for number of listens to your stuff each day. You get a message board. Easy to use. Very good indeed I think for free.

Yeah, I'm with Neil here. Actually from what I know nowdays around music sites (omds) , soundclick is the choice No1 if you simply are looking for the place where you can make your mp3 tracks available and you don't want or simply can't pay for it. Also do not expect anything from soundclick in the are of promotion of your act or any major exposure there. It's just not gonna happend, (as well it is not going to happen anywhere on the internet period, unless you put some time, energy, creativity and , yes, cash into).
The best thing about soundclick free option is that it is extremly simple and instant, (no approval time, apload and it's available). And the interface is very easy to use, unlike some other sites, where it's pretty confusing or too complex. Also at soundclick your 'artist page' is very straight forward , layout it just wahat it is - tracks - d-load/stream - no complicated scripts etc...

Again, I just want to underline this one more time, guys, for all of you, who may read this...:
Paying for some on-line music distribution site to have your artist page there and post your mp3s, and not having your own site - is !NO-NO! nowdays.
I am saying this from somewhat pretty long time experience dealing with the whole issue. If you have some money to spend - then go for building and promoting your own website (with your own domain - must have!), and focus all your energy and time on your site.
Yes, I know, when you setup your own website - it is nowhere...simply nobody knows about it, no visitors no nothing.... right? - right. No sh*t, man. It's just like everything else. It takes time to get anything anywhere.
One of the foolling factors of OMD sites is that when you set-up your account there and upload your track(s) and in a day or two you already have couple of d-loads, them more....and you feel like - "Yes, baby: I'm in - My Art is Out...people are listening to my stuff!".... well, it's just an illussion really. Then you also may get into checking your stats, then checkin you positions in charts, then readin reviews, written by another 'artist' like yourself without real interest, but just because it is a nice thing to do to write a reviews of the tracks from another artist on the same mp3-site, then posting on b-board...check my new tune, some other artists may click on your mp3s and then type couple of word on b-board about it, and you are happy. Etc Etc.... and all this takes time, energy, ... you simply waste. The problem is that it is all just an illusion of "self-presentation" as an artist, it's like a game in the club or people with similar interest.
Do real thing first: Make your own presentetion as an independent artist. DIRECT from You to The Public, period. No games, here. See where you can REALLY get. :)
If you do have more time and cash to spend, then you can waste it on other websites... it's not going to get you anywhere, thou... but may make you feel good, make you feel like you trying different things out, or makeyou feel like you are being some sort of part of something else, some music community and sh*t like that ...heh heh ... or what ever , yada yada ;) :)
Also, I have to add to this, speaking of money! If you feel like it's too much to spend 50/70/100 bucks a year on having your own artist/music site, think again and keep in mind, that it is going to be your own 100% complete control web-site, and with some creativity and using available internet tools, you can relatively easylly pay-off you bill, but making a few bucks on advertising, selling something on-line, join some affiliate marketing program ( see for example this site for info etc: Commission Junction ), which can be done tastefully, not in the face and be in good relation with the content of your site. This is not going to make you rich, but will simply help you to keep your presentation on-line financially balanced.

ok, then,
/later
