yesterday i zapped through my 62 channels and guess what? on mtv (europe) they had a bunch of cartoon monkeys drifting through outer space with a DUB track underneath. the music was infected to some extent by that ska-punk attitude i never liked and the vocals weren't my case either (at least on first listen) - but the rest was there: organ skanks, offbeat guitars, echoes, .. i've never heard anything as dubby as this on mtv so far.
as i found out the tune is from the recently released album "laika come home" by space monkeys vs gorillaz. this seems to be the dub counterpart to the gorillaz' debut album (the one with the pop hit "clint eastwood").

has anybody listened to this album yet?

here's the editorial review from amazon:

Sure, Gorillaz sounded original, but it was a pop project with all the constraints that went with it--can you imagine the six-minute remixed version of "Clint Eastwood" making it onto MTV? But that's exactly what makes Laika Come Home so good. It's a reimagined collection filled with bone-shaking dubscapes and enough reverb to transmit a message to the farthest edges of the universe. Listen to the "De-Punked" version of "Punk" with its meandering, decayed trumpet and computerized tweaks--hardly recognizable as the original--or the swinging old-school ska that crops ups on "5/4." The two-tone skank of "M1/A1" (with Terry Hall) sounds as if it should have been the original version, but the real killer tracks are those injected with dancehall vibes by DJ U Brown and Earl 16. Who says "you don't get paid for doing what you love?" Not Damon Albarn. --Caroline Butler

heh heh, I just love this kind of wording-style in reviews. It makes what reviewer saying sort of unformed, sounding cool and interesting while making no specific point of any kind. :)
I can reply something like:
well, as I would understand, to give enough momentum to TheMessage, so it could reach the edges, you don't use reverb, but rather sharp'n'dry compressed punch of bass'n'ridm.
"Reverb-outs" sound to me more like messages comming from the Edges of The Universe our way, or just passing by The Earth, never making a Transit StopBy, because we "smell wrong" and nobody here to 'get the message' :)...

See what I mean? heh heh, this kind of conversation.
********
seriously, I wish I had a chance to see this stuff. Currently I don't even have cable-TV subscription, I have cable modem back thou ...!!!
And what mtv here is - ,man, it is really hard to make myself to watch it, I make myself to watch it sometimes, just so to keep eye on what's up there.
Also, regardless, if DUB is making it out - it's a GOOD NEWS ...

best,

I don't think the lovers of Dub watch MTV... personnaly i haven't...

But that can make discovre dub to other people that don't know this music style... How many times i have heard : "Dub ??? what is this ???" so it's a good think to make dub more accesible to public.
But i don't want to see on all dub album "UNIVERSAL MUSIC"... I don't want dub go deep in babylon, he muste keep this "Friendly" atmosphere.

scarry though: if something happens similar to Moby on mtv with cheezzzzzy pop non-songs songs while people, critiques and press still are saying: here's Moby - the techno-"king". Then millions of people around the globe who never heard/listened/had any idea about TECHNO will think, that this is 'techno', and it sucks :)
hope this will never happens to DUB. It BETTER!!! never happens, geeeeeeee... think about it.
Or better don't think about it, 'cos thinking about DUB's painful death in the trap of the comercial pop-toilet may make your stomach ill for the rest of the week... ;)

so , some extra 'thoughts' to KoCha's point...

I seriousley do NOT want to see DUB music commercialised in the future. For me atleast, that is what makes listening to DUB music so special- it makes it..I dunno, your own vibe you can relax or bop to??! If it does get commercialised by the listeners- people will kill the tunes and DUB will be sumting like HIP HOP music- with videos made for MTV...
And yeah, it might sound abit selfish of me to say that- but thats just my honest opinion!
I simply think that DUB should not be messed with!!

kind regards,

I used to love Hip Hop until about 2 years ago, then the whole scene became polluted with this disgusting shitty crap which ruin it all. It became pop music. If the same thing happens to Dub I'm gonna shoot all the pop artists who destroy it.

well I don't know, this commercialisation and media hype thing.. it happened to jungle back in 94, it's happening to reggae since the seventies, it might happen to Dub one day (i don't really believe that though), but who cares? You allways have some pop artists producing pop tunes with a certain amount of "sub culture flavour". They sell more and and are the only ones being noticed by the mainstream audience. when the media hype is over those who never liked your music in the first place will tell you: "hey boy, your music is OUT, don't you think you should start listening to real music now?"
So what? let the suckers talk and "doowutchyalike" as digital underground said back in 1990.. Those who love DUB will always be around and those who don't have a clue might get interrested to hear the real thing after they get bored with the watered down pop version.

I used to be in to HIP HOP too.... but its true what you say- It's like Hip Hop is soo glamourised now-a-dayz.. Its all about sex, cash and bling bling!! 2pac on the other hand, I admit, I was a big fan of his songs... I liked his poetry more though...
I mean i'm into my music- I can listen to any genre of music- I still listen to alot of Drum N Bass & Jungle [old skool]- but with DUB, it has more of an impact on me than any other genre like R n' B- I find myself getting bored of these crappy love songz easily after i've listened to them 5-6 timez... That only means one thing: It is not a well made tune. Good tunes are the ones that you can never get bored with.. But then again, it depends on your taste in music. ;o)
With DUB on the other hand, I can never get bored. People kill it and made artists such as EMINEM a POP ARTIST not a HIP HOP ARTIST...[he's sooo commercialised!] Imagine if that happens to.....(?) Hmmmm!

Peace 2 all Dubsters,
Jas.

King Tubby videos being played 20 or 30 times a day on mtv! Jacob Miller looking down into a fish eye lens, while his dance troupe move in perfect unison....Its true what you say, interruptor, there is a good side, but, ah I dunno, its always been the more underground artists I've been interested in anyway...

I finally bought this album ("Laika come home" - Space Monkeys vs. Gorillaz) and find it quite recommendable.
Although this is a brand new album it does not sound like computer dub at all. Obviously a lot of work and dedication went into recreating the original sound timbres from the seventies. Nothing sounds as if it came out of a sequencer. Instead you find plenty of organ, live bass, brass lines, live drums, percussion and some of those "outer space sound effects" that you might know from very old science fiction movies.
In fact you could almost think this is dub from the seventies if there weren't a few differencies:
- superb sound quality (no hiss, no crackle, up to date punchy sound)
- apart from the authentic and excellent reggae vocals by U Brown and Earl 16 you have some vocal bits of The Gorillaz' singer 2D on most of the tracks who with his "indie rock" vocal style could put off many orthodox reggae lovers.
- you might miss the signature sound and feel of certain session musicians which played in allmost every classic dub session.

The album maintains it's high standard over all 12 tracks plus the 2 hidden tracks (vocal versions of U Browns excellent "Strictly Rubbadub" and "A fistful of peanuts" the dub remix of the Gorillaz' hit "Clint Eastwood" featuring Earl 16)

I understand what you mean when you say that you want to keep this music underground. but don't think that this music is for an elite (is it the good word, like in french?). this is dangerous and pretentious.
we got to spread reggae and dub all over the world.

and it is not as simple that "dub lovers don't watch MTV". I hope that everyone here is not "dub lovers" but "music lovers".
I use to watch MTV, and also other bad tv programs. I like the idea to know the maximum things about music in general. in order to speak about music with my parents, grand-parents, little sister, job mates, postman etc...

Mike, regarding what you wrote about Moby:
Anybody who says that Moby is playing techno music obviously has no knowlege of modern music at all.
That man is an artist, and he cannot be constrained by genres.
I mean, before the man even played electronic music, he played punk rock, so what does that say?
Sell out? I don't think so. He's to versatile to be bound by just one type of music.
Lately, his music sounds a lot like trip-hop to me... am I wrong?

Respect.

Sell out or not? who cares. it's a usual spoone'o'blah :) From "dedicated" techno-head Moby is a one big anoying joke. And it has nothing to do with Moby-artist, because techno-head (I mean a guy who is deeply into techno as a listener/fan/club-dude) - he/she does not care about what Moby did play and what his stuff used to be etc..., teachno-head just hear many Radio-DJs calling him a Techno-King and then playing some jorky pop-crap with NuDoupt-chik Stefani...and going on and on and on...
Is this a "popularization" of techno? (or even any electronic music?) - NOP! it is not.
Now, to be honest, I don't think he did what he did on MTV because He really wanted to. But something pushed him at the end for this, and I think it is a simple: "Why Not????"-thing, why not to get a spot after all these years of being underground-prince - now I can be a King, and I don't give a crap how wnad by doing what.
It's all fine with me... I don't trash Moby as an artist ..., actually I don't care 'bout the guy, he does what he wants and good for him. The problem is thou, that his stuff suck in pop-world. I mean it's ok, but to be on top of MTV-list - give me a break. He's not that kind of guy, he's not a show-dude, he can't perform, it's all silly sh*t... BackStreetBuys are great if you compare them to Moby-Pop-Star. I mean it.

Lately, his music sounds a lot like trip-hop to me... am I wrong?

Lately his stuff is a poorly written and produced pop. That's what it is, if you ask me.
******
but again, I've mentioned Moby here just to illustrate what I would not wish to see in regards to dub.
I mean do you want to see LSP somewhere in Madonna's video and hear couple of dubbin'effects for here next dance-track, and some jork-DJ on MTV will be saying: "Madonna - DUB-quinnzzzzyyy with gran-pa Lee :)" It would be fun to watch thou ..heh heh, and I actually happened to like allots of Madonna's works (even when the meat of it is not really her work :))....

ok,
later, guys,
/respects,

DUB will never go pop. 13 year old girls don't buy dub records. fresh faced cute boys don't make dub records. so all you worried that dub is gonna sell out are only worried about nonsense. i am a fan of the band Gorillaz and when i read that there was a dub version of their album being released i rushed over to the record store to pick up a copy. i enjoy the album, it's a good listen, i don't compare it to other dub records because that would be silly. i recommend you add Laika comes home to your music collection.
