This is a good idea in my opinion.. better to start with one decent piece of gear and build on that! rather thatn buying lots of cheap stuff that you will soon have to upgrade..
In my opinion, the things worth spending money on are:
1) audio interface
2) monitors
3) mic (if you need one)

I just recently got my hands on an Echopet EV100 from ebay. Its a nice unit with an authentic dub echo sound. Knobs are as crackly as a hell. At present, I prefer it to my Boss RE-20 (COSM pedal version of the RE-201) which i paid a lot more for. This may be because i need to get used to using the r...

Using VST plugins as insert effects on a hardware mixer.. ?
Anyone ever had a go at this? Essentially, I am curious if anyone has tried to mix using a hardware mixer and then using the aux sends, send a signal to an audio interface, apply an effect (e.g. reverb/delay) to the signal and then send it back out to the return on the desk. I would imagine, even wi...

As Neil said.. You need an audio interface with Multiple ins/outs e.g. Edirol FA-101, Motu 828, RME Fireface You need a mixing desk with direct outs on each channel.. e.g. Spirit Sx20, Mackie have a few decent desks with direct outs.. there are plenty of decent desks available second hand at a reaso...

Smoking Ganja and Dub - Necessity or negative association?
I am interested to know what people think about the relationship between herb and dub. It is an association that sometimes bothers me. As we know, some of the best Dub was produced in studios where smoking was banned (i.e. Tubbys) so is it purely an individual decision? Do people feel it can help wi...

interesting approach .. not blasphemy at all .. dub is about individual aproach i am unsure what you mean by 53% swing etc... if you are referring to timing, then it is of course all relative to song tempo dont get too caught up in numbers though.. the whole is always greater than the sum of the parts

Scratch used a desk made by a company called Alice. I believe they make broadcast mixers! :-) It was not seen as a pro mixer at all but that didnt matter to scratch - he did use drum mics for vocals after all! Whenever i get caught up in technology (new or old).. thinking i need something new to cre...

I got an Spirit SX 20 pretty cheap a while ago with a view to using it for live dubbing. They are nice desks especially with the direct outs for each channel. Do you it noisy when driven hard? We hooked up to sound systems recently and there was a kind of hiss that i couldnt get rid of.. it was fine...

Yeah. Any electric guitar can be used for skank. Heavy gauge strings helpTube amps are best for a nice "chuck". Wah and phase with give you that nice early "squelchy" sound that Scratch was famous for... think black ark sound At the moment, I am trying to achieve that really raw gritty chop sound (s...
