Maybe piano/skank the percussive, definately bass the melody.....drums.hhmmm maybe the feel. Ive had a straight 16th hihat, rim&kik on the third, then added slight slap-back delay on the hats, and the feel has changed considerably.....more groovier and in the pocket

It's all in the attack. If you are say playing an a triad on stings 1,2 &3 @ the fifth and sixth frets, Use your pick to attack the strings with even, hard precision, and then mute rythmically with left hand. All the effects are nice, but you could sound good doing that completely dry too, and use effects later.

Jason F

san francsisco

Easy...

I think something very important in dub reggae (and all other music) that hasn't already been mentioned when playing is the connection of the body with the head and guitar.
For instance, if you are sat down recording guitar, the timing will improve loads if you phisically bounce up and down with the beat, in double time if its slow dub. Dance, use your ass! Thats where the groove is! Just try doing a line slow, then try it moving... Your timing will improve!
Another cool tip is, if u have quite a melodic dub bassline, play along with the line note for note with a palm muted pick technique on the right hand. Add a little reverb, delay or phase. The beginning of "could u b loved" has this sound. Coupled with a nice sparse bassline this sounds wicked.
Laters

Keep that ass movin

Barney

Ha! Barney,
i don't know about 'easy...' ;),
but you've made a good point about 'body work'

not sure about 'how much do you really need to dance', he he he, but some movin'-to-the-groove really works. I've found for myself, that it's kind of hard, or even impossible (maybe) to get/play right feel , seating on your 'A**. ha ha,
it just does not go right, sort of speak...

later,

respects,

/Mike Zee
zee dub lab

Imagine you are a small axe chopping at Babylons roots in a steady, unrelenting fashion. Hypnotize yourself with the constancy of the rythm.Make your notes short and the stroke of your arm long and followed through. IBdubbin

i don't listen to much dub, in fact i'm a metal head, but i found this site searching for home recording and stuff because i do a bit of this myself. when it comes to guitar i like to play all styles and i've never minded chucking on a marley cd. here's what i came up with playing around a bit. the easiest way to get started is to start with major root 6 bar chords. choose "happier" sounding notes as your root notes, i reckon go for G (3rd fret) C (8th fret) and D (10th fret). on a down stroke of the pick, hit the top four strings. on the up stroke, the bottom four. use palm muting on the 6th string creatively and rythmically, and use left hand dampening when you see fit. please don't limit yourself, though, as these are just my suggestions. you will of course need some guitar experience and a fairly decent technique, but practice makes perfect! hope this was of some help

Luke, Australia

feel free to email me any comments or questions!

good luck

How to play reggae guitar? Listen to any recording with Earl "Chinna" Smith and copy copy copy!!! This guy is an musical genius, and deserves a reputation akin to Sly & Robbies. 90% of 70s reggae recordings feature him and I think he currenly works with Ziggy Marley (but we won't hold that agains him ;-) ).

Cheers. John Foreplay.

Also, anyone in Victoria Australia should come down to 'Rockers' on Tuesday nights at Ruby's Belgrave to hear to finest roots reggae tunes.

the Typical Dub Reggae sound you speak of = minor chords.

example:

D, F, A - D minor.
D, G, A# - D minor 4th.

You can move up 7 from those too:

G#, A#, D - G# minor.

or do inversions of the chords:

F, A, D - "D/F"...which means D minor, F as the root.

Hope that helps and is what you were looking for.

Email me if you wanna discuss music.

When I play guitar on reggae/dub songs I usually don't the guitar as guitar! I use it like a percussion instrument.
I play it on the upbeat without putting down the fingers and make chords. Mute the strings with your left hand and use your right hand to make the percussive sounds. try it out with a wah-wah
pedal!
With singlecoil-mics and a lot of treble on the amp you get a really nice 60-soul or rootsreggae sound also.

KidPete

How do you get the reggae sound out of a keyboard is it an effect or maybe an organ. Should I just play along with the guitar with chopy chords?

Reese: Often the guitar skanks are doubled with chords from a piano (real piano or grand piano preset on the keyboard)

if u think of it it terms of beats ina bar- 1st beat - mute, 2nd beat - upstroke chord( but really attack the strings) 3rd beat- try playing the root of the chord, on the low e string(or a fifth works okay too) 4th beat - mute....repeat indefinitly -
goes like this...wok cha dung cha, wok cha dung cha ( also try adding a quick upstroke on the mutes - wokka)

skank is much more feel than technique.
You should listen to the drummer, and fit in around what they are doing. their swing. Think of it like playing percussion rather than a guitar.

remember. it's a two way thing, if you start pushing the beat, the drummer will follow. best rhythm sections all lock together. The little guitar chicks and woccas make it sound like there is a percussionist playing at the same time.

Mikey,
if you want "tube-sounding" amp, then get tube-amp. heh heh, -simple isn't it.
Now, when you say "more bottom, heavy - not loud".... there may be a bit of a problem. hah
Well, I mean, tube=amps are damn loud...they just are. And btw, when "we say" loud - it's a very specific thing....basicly, it's like comparing two amps with the same power, same gain, but subjectively which one "sounds louder". see what I mean. So, another words, 60W tube combo is as loud as you can handle really...
Check Fender HotRod Tube amps - they are very heavy - I mean you need a good muscly to cary it around ...HehHe Or if you play only in small clubs , you may try Blues Junior and alike, Peavey Delta Blues - is really cool retrish amp less cost than retro-Fender amps, but gives you allot for a buck (also with trmolo)
There are "hotter and rockier" tube amps of course... they are damn expansive thou...

/respects,
/Mike Zee aka Dr ZEE
ZEE DUB LAB

Best guitar skanks you'll ever get are produced by "half-muting" the strings, just don't press all the way down the fretboard with your left hand (kinda like when you are tuning).

Downstrokes are best, and HIT HARD. Better use heavy gage strings too.
