risks when buying a space echo on ebay ?
Hi there! <BR>I've enjoyed the dub discussion board, though i'm after a bit of advise. I'm selling my Lexicon MPX-1 to fund a RE 201 Space Echo for my studio and was wondering if there are any specific problems i should look out for when buying one of these? Do you recommend getting one from eBay? Or will it fall apart after a bit of use as i suspect? Is it worth paying more for one from a shop - or should i take the risk? <BR>I appreciate any advise you can offer, <BR>Many thanks, <BR>Elliott

i bought old gear on ebay on some occasions and never had a bad experience so far. make sure the seller has no negative reviews and a lot of good ones. ask the seller whether he tried the machine himself. Be aware that a tape must be included or you'll have to get it elsewhere. (some tips can be found in this forum) <BR>you can view also the finished auctions on ebay and thus get an idea of how much people end up paying usually for a space echo. <BR> <BR>i think it's a good idea to follow the auctions for a certain time and then bid on a specifically well treated unit: no visible wear, documentation/manual included, original accessories included (backup tape, cleaning fluid) <BR> <BR>old stuff can always fail. there is no guarantee - although these machines for musicians are built sturdier than nowadays consumer electronics. <BR> <BR>in other words: be prepared to accept that it will not work. if you are still ready to shell out the money then you are a real vintage lunie.. <BR><IMG SRC="http://www.interruptor.ch/cgi-bin/discu ... /crazy.gif"> <IMG SRC="http://www.interruptor.ch/cgi-bin/discu ... /laugh.gif">

I would say don't buy vintage gear on ebay if you cyan't solder. I've received a couple things that were damaged during shipping. Sometimes it's just as simple as a connector that worked itself loose inside the unit when it was jostled around by the people who load the big brown trucks. maybe you'll need to fix a broken solder joint. <BR> <BR>Ask lots of questions before you buy. Do the pots make noise when adjusted? Ask about the condition of the tape transport, tape heads, etc. <BR> <BR>It's also important to make sure the seller packs the item according to the standards set by carrier.
