I have over the years put my bass through a number of boxes and amp sim things to get a better sound.
I listened back to an old piece recently and realised I liked that sound more than my current one, which means buying back that piece of gear (which was the second of 4 bits of such gear).
I think being objective about bass, is one of the most difficult things.

Yeah.... it's soooo true...
But for me there is a solution.. have a choose between two sound....for different styles... one iperpumped active 5strings bass, with medium freq cutted, and gain oversized to sound like a modern Dub bass (handle with care!!) & and one freetless nasal bass for jazzy stile... Surprised

Speaker

I really love the bass tone coming from old mic'ed tube amps, kind of a
punchy vintage tone, dont have to be just ultra deep to appeal to me. But the
Amp is very important and the speaker box / membrane and mic also.

I read that at Studio One they built a custom speaker box for the bass,
with some holes in the back of the speaker were they would put the mics.
They actually recorded the sound from the back of the speaker. Then
they also had a nice pulltec EQ with whom they would push the really
deep frequencies like 40Hz!!!!

-i read this in this book on amazon you can check out big parts of the book with the ''look inside'' feature:

One can get nice tube amps for like 100. We use a big orgaphon from
hohner, some of these are really nice for bass and they can produce very
versatile bass tones. (although originally made for organs and electric
accordions, they really can handle bass frequencys, atleast the ones with
bigger speakers do have great low end.)!!
A great feature on some of them (offcourse not for the bass), are the
tremolo AND a fuckin great tube spring reverb in some of them

Also the bass strings can do miracles even if some bassist will tell you
that this is not the case.... One secret i ve discovered with my cousin to
get nice tone is rub candle wax on your bass strings and then run a
lighter over them to melt the wax so that it goes nicely around and inside
the strings..it gives a little smooth attack/string pick sound and kind of
a warmer not so hard, but still very compact and strong tone. some
people may think we are crazy to do this with our instruments, go buy a
set of new strings and try this... once you ve heard the difference you will
believe shred Cool

Not going into what bass has the best tone, wich bass pickups ect since i
dont have an opinion on that(we are using very cheap basses). what
should be said is that, for a really good reggae/dub bass, the way you
play the instrument is the most important thing to me.

Peace Yiannis
