Tape machine

Hi! What is the use of a tape machine if you have a computer to record in? I planning to by a Fostex G24 s 24-channel tape machine, couse almost every one that makes dub is using one. wow, Sam, this machine looks ... hmmmmmmmmmm, how shall I say this??? it looks REAL! heh heh heh. for for 230 euro? Well, try to make sure that it actually works, if you have a chance. Now, what is it good for?? he heh.... Again, this is like the same old conversation about which way to go in production process. We did blah blah about it so much already I think. From point of vew of Simply-Recording - it does nothing much of a good if you compare with digital recording with all the dediting features and more. Also will depend on what you record and how and the whole rest of the process. Analog tape recording has its own specific "taste", generally speaking it's like heavy-dity work, while digital recording is mor 'sensitive' and 'gentle'... well I maybe don't make sense saying this.... Tape has speed, you know - it's never perfectly the same, it is not always perfectly records/plays back, you can run it faster, slower, rewind, cut'n'splice, stop the tape with your hand, make a loop, add heads - make strange stuff etc.... all this make it a sort of unique when thinking about creativity in dub. You can't do this in digital world, while digital world gives you the whole new world of creativity. Gotta combine it nowdays, anless you are trying to work in some specific pure old-style way... Sam, i can't get anywhere with the link you've posted, it maybe tempor.server out or wrong link???? But I think I know the machine you are talking about, I don't mean I had it or ever worked with, just from other people experience and reviews. The machine is ok (I mean was <IMG SRC="http://www.interruptor.ch/cgi-bin/discu ... /happy.gif" ALT=":)">). When shoppin' for reel2reel tape muti-track you can generally think this way - from bottom to top: fostex > tascam > otari > studer. at least half-inch (1/2") tape... it's like wider tape-better. I think the most popular and most relyable machine and not crazy expansive for home-studio is Tascam-TSR-8 (it's 8 track) - a nice machine. Those dish-washer size studio-recorders are great sure, but man, they are no cheap, plus you may have to do work to keep it running, you even may end-up fixing things and ordering expansive parts in addition to regular maintains (which isn't that easy by your-self, or if you do it in pro-shop it'll cost you again - <IMG SRC="http://www.interruptor.ch/cgi-bin/discu ... rt/sad.gif" ALT=":("> ), and tape isn't cheap.... really allots of things to think twice here. In my mind if you are planing to do your own dubs - get yourself either digital multi-track stand-alone type of machine or put together computer-based multy-track recording (you bassically need a large hard-drive, fair amount of RAM (even 32MB of ram will do , if just for recording/playback without real time dsp effects, for example I can record and play back with no problem on my old old old computer, with W95, CakwalkProAudio-Version6.0 (old), 120-pentium-processor (heh heh heh - laughable for nowdays) and guuess what? - only 16MB of RAM!!!! - record and playback 8-tracks - no problem, I think I can do even more tracks if I needed, I just happend to get myself two AKAI-DR4s digital recorders for multitrack recordings, even before I've got computer for music-production) And you need to get yourself a multy analog in/out sound-card with in/out box .. they are not expansive nowdays, allots to choose from. And then later if you really wish to spend more money and get some vintage recorders - then go for it, and add it to your studio. Hi! Does anyone know anything about this tape machine "SONY STEREO TAPECORDER TC-630D"? Is it good for dub purpose? I am thinking about to using it as an tapedecho, does it work? Hehe, swedish can be pretty hard to understand. lemme help you: "Vertical tape recorder, 1/4" tape, 4 channel stereo (the tape can be recorded on both sides). Three tape speeds, 1 7/8", 3 3/4" and 7 1/2" per second. Built in amplifier. Works fine. The lid to the speakers is missing though. Some knobs are missing. A knob (don't know which one he means...) is replaced with a non-original knob. Sound-On-Sound and tape delay is the bomb (something like that)" anyway, seems like the machine has built in tape delay, which is of course very cool. ps. how do i register a username and password for the forum? ds.
