KoCha, if you are planning to buitd your own 'stuff', then learn something (as much as you can) about shematics etc... takes time, you know.

For connection with spring usually RCA-connectors are used, they sell them as related items as well: cables

Springs's parameters are predetermined by its size and what it made of ... so that's what you have - it IS fixed.

Check this page again for some ideas about connection and wiring, when building your own reverb:
spring thing

here's another rack-spring built based on accutronics tanks: RV-1 Real Reverb
RV1 at Demeter Pro Audio Site

respects,
/Mike Zee

did you see this thread already? Dubcreator successfully connected the spring box directly to the aux send of his mackie mixer, without preamp. so some mixers seem to have enough output gain to drive a spring directly. If your mixer is not one of those you could also try to drive the spring with a normal audio amp, just make sure you only do this if the imput impedance of your spring box is in the usual range of 4 - 8 Ohm for speakers or higher. otherwise the resulting current will be too high for the amplifier.

i have now tried out 5 different spring reverbs (commercial units including pre and post amp) and in summary i can say that the spring sound really differs a lot between them. so if you just take any spring and any amplifier circuit don't expect to get a particularly dubby sound out of it!

i started experimenting with spring reverbs since i like the reverb sound on the dubs from king tubby's a lot. i got best results with a fisher spacexpander (a tube driven reverb from the sixties). it is likely that tubby used one of these since king jammy has stated in an interview that they used a modified fisher reverb at tubby's: "... The reverb unit that we used to use there, it was a Fisher reverb, an' we change it up to become a King Tubby and Fisher! (laughs). ..."
for me the most characteristic reverb sound from tubby's is what happened when they sent the bass drum and the rim click (i.e. from a one drop beat) together to the spring. this resulted in a echo-like wobbly reverb sound starting with a "blip" that sounds almost like a water drop falling into a tub and gives the reverb a somehow liquid/watery feel.
so far i was only able to create this effect with the fisher spacexpander. i had to drive the input very hard, in fact i used an additional preamp between my auxiliary send and the input of the spacexpander. i recently recorded some samples of this.. stay tuned, i will post some wav-files here to illustrate what i mean..

ok. here are the samples:

1. a low frequency "pop" going through king tubby's spring reverb sampled from the very start of scientist's album "scientific dub" (an excellent album by the way, available on clocktower records)

2. here i sent a bass drum sample through a fisher spacexpander, the high spring is muted with a piece of lace, sampled directly from the spacexpander output, no eq, no compression

hehh, Daniel, that's classic magic-drop

gotta have a spring.

btw, Daniel makes important point here, also what DC mentioned many times, keep in mind that GOOD spring reverb unit does not really mean it's good for dub. Like this RV-1 rack, it's expansive, and you may find allots of great reviews about it, but will it do any good in your dub-lab...hmmm?
Well, I'm speculating here, it's just my guess, but new "improved" spring reverbs are maybe too 'clean' for creating dub-spring sound, and you may be better off with some old tank, but you'll need to do some handy-man work on it and experiment around.
JUST CHECK EVERYTHING TWICE, before connecting your 'creation' directly to your mixer or any other valuable gear

Well, you always have option experimenting with what ever digital effect-processors you've got - SAFELY, but to get the 'magic sound'... hmmm, I don't know. It's like very very hard or 'impossible', you can get some similar effect, but not like real spring.
I've got something sort of interesting with digital effect processors-chain and eq/comp combination, I think the one of the best/dirty sounding verb I've got on "Crippled" track.
Here link to check it: CRIPPLED mp3
I was slide-sending trough effect-chain snare/kik hits group, some guitar chops here and there, also tweaking some eq in send and/or return portion in real time (well as much as could manage it with two hands ) etc...
But again it's more or less just a similar vibrating sound but something is missing there...

later,
respects
/Mike Zee

the pop happens because the low frequencies move the springs enough so that they touch.. that is where the pop comes from

I have a NEI (Neptune Electronics Inc) Spring Reverb and it works great. It also has a 4-band eq built which really helps. Before that I used just the spring tray out of Hammond, with the aux send on my Soundcraft M8 and back into the mixer. Also, I just pretty much kept the springs exposed, so I could disturb them when needed. (Just a finger flick and you'll get that classic Tubby crash). Another thing you could try is to gently brush up on the springs with something, like an small paintbrush - it can produce some interesting sounds for dub.

-D
